Threshold: point we become aware of something becoming painful, can change from person to person. Tolerance (cid:523)pain(cid:524): at which you"re willing to do something about something that"s. Acute pain: good pain, where you"re told something is injured/sore/hurt, treated. Go thru fingers, arms, to spinal cord (enter dorsal horn), synapse with neuron within dorsal horn, goes to lateral spino-thoracic tract to thalamus, synapses with another neuron which goes to ssc easily, localized. Chronic pain: bad pain, more diffuse, harder to find where it hurts, from something traumatic, more difficult to fix. Phantom limb pain = where u lost limbs. Spinal cord, thalamus, primary somato-sensory cortex (in post-central gyrus) Ssc set up like a homunculus (feet, torso, face = distribution of neurons which is proportional to feeling) Free nerve endings are sensitive to diff stimuli (pressure, heat, chemicals) 1st 3rd neuron = primary, secondary, to tertiary afferent.
