Document Summary

Revamping things from years ago; pop culture. We are subjects in crisis our sense of self is also constructed. Hyper-realism -- in our hyper-real world, the real and the fake have become interchangeable. Appearances (social constructs) are what is real; there is nothing deeper (essences, absolutes) behind appearances. Reality and simulation are experienced as without difference. In popular culture, the construction of "celebrity" and "celebrity culture" could be seen as an example of this. The "celebrity" is always a construction, there is no deeper truth behind their self-presentation and the media"s presentation of their "image. " For example, the "news" or a "media event" is always a construction of events, images, sounds, sound-bites, and commentaries. It makes no sense to speak of "news" as original or authentic. Simulation -- the process by which the distinction between original and copy has been destroyed.
