Document Summary
Nature of product being produced for sale changes when the advertiser gets involved. It"s the audience that gets produced and packaged to advertisers. Can develop huge databases and can target advertising very directly. A very good program, in industry terms, is one that produces good ratings. Must be produced at a low cost to be sold at a low price. Real content is not the program but the commercial. Audiences perform a kind of labour for the program. Main beneficiary of the audiences labour is the broadcaster because it is our labour (attention) that makes the audience a valuable commodity. Commercial sponsorship implies mediocre programming there"s a constant pressure on the objective quality of programming. Industry doesn"t need to own the audiences; they need to own the ratings chart. When you examine a system from a macro point of view, you also see a system that exploits our labour.
