Document Summary

Chapter 1 course in general linguistics, ferdinand de saussure & chapter 2 . Ferdinand de saussure was a linguistics professor who died at the age of 56 in 1913. Saussure"s important idea is that we find meaning in life by seeing things as signs, which is anything that can be used to stand for something else. His theory of signs called semiology comes from the greek term semeion, which means signs. Another important idea of his was that language is a system of signs in which the meaning of a term is based on its relations to other terms in the system. Each word in a sentence affects every other word"s meaning and the order of the words is crucial. Concepts take their meaning from their relationship with other terms. Saussure explains his theory as thinking about how the words in a sentence affect the meaning of words.
