The making, marking & maintaining (of social equality and difference) Neutral: discourse is a social process of constructing meaning within a mutually under- stand set of rules (159). Less neutral: are the means of organizing and transmitting social control (159). Discourse reminds us that there"s more than one way to look at an object/relationship. Because of that if we have multiple/competing discourse, we also have changing ideas in time and space where one is more privileged than the other (could be good or bad). With discourse, the definition of a person/thing/idea is never fixed. Discourse suggests movement, there"s an opportunity for change. Discourse can be laws, practices, written words, images, symbols, signs, architecture (the drawing). When we move into material practices and spaces, we talk about ideology.
