Focuses on the conditions within an urban environment that can affect crime rates. Previous sociological theorists focused on society as their unit of analysis (durkheim) In this case, the unit is narrowed down to the neighbourhood. Social disorder in communities exists when institutions of social control have broken down, which means that they are no longer able to carry out their expected function. Many of these sociological theories are explanations to why low-income neighbourhoods are criminogenic. Their work is an example of american sociological positivism. They were interested in the social structure and conditions of the american city. They were interested in particular in the structure of 19th centuries chicago.
