EDFE 1300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Toronto District School Board, Medicalization, Life Skills
Document Summary
Assignments will be posted well in advance. Time for group presentations will be saved for the end. There are a few models of disability. Most of society is structured around - the person with the disability is labeled the problem. Traditional view - disability is caused by impairment. Relies on the assumption that if you are not normal you are abnormal. Relies on a number of professionals assumed to be an expert on various issues and components of a child"s developmental needs. We"ve created a system in which we compare children to other children and determine what is appropriate. Diagnosis based on disability does not consider the individual. When students get grouped into special classes this is based on the medical model - Ex not all children with autism need the same things. Many things have become medicalized that never used to be - see slides for examples.
