Taken from the norton (but one we have not examined before) For poetry, context is going to make some difference depending on whether it is a pre- modern poem or a modern poem (usually given a clue of where it is situated) Check for intertext: the way a piece of literature eludes to other texts: the purpose of creative activity is to situate the work of art in a particular genre. If the work of art is simply mimicking what has been done before is out of interest. Imposing new order on older legacy pieces of literature forever changing, like language: looking at what is consistent in the form and what has changed. Poetry is the opposite of fiction and prose in the way that it is analyzed.
