EN 2100 Lecture 10: EN2100 - Week 10
Document Summary
War poetry are either pro-war or anti-war: therefore, tone is very important, more so than other poems because it"s a touchy subject. Tone is separable from argument - the timber of the words: how the words are presented; passionately, sadly, calmly, etc. The speaker"s opinion on war: he is for it: war is honourable and it exists for honour. It makes a man out of you: war is what allows us to love, it may equal love for the speaker, the mistress is linked with war. The speaker"s tone: persuasive, unapologetic, and proud: the directness of the poem shows no shame, war is characterized as positive - the best of what we would consider as human emotions. Love is portrayed as something the speaker is willing to sacrifice before honour. It"s not as important as honour - a hierarchy is created o: honour above all, and while love is important, it"s not as important as honour.
