EN 1602 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Sestet, Trochee, West Wind
Document Summary
Two other forms of lyric poetry: odes and elegies. Permanency versus impermanency (things coming and going away) Dying and disappearing time triumphs all. Constantly cross reference both texts all throughout the paper. Don"t write one comparison then second comparison and finally a total comparison. Organizational structure based on points of comparison and points of contrast. Don"t start off with dictionary definition in academic paper. Not simply an analysis of a poem/novel. Poems of an elevated and solemn nature. Poems that deal with serious subject matter. There are some unconventional odes and elegies that don"t do that. Addressed to a specific person or concept/ entity. Tend to be longer poems than sonnets but unified. Used as a form of dramatic poetry and used by greek choruses. Often used in greek dramatic poetry in public praise. Often a private reflection of poet or speaker of poem. Has one stanza type that"s repeated regularly. No consistent end rhyme or stanzaic pattern.
