Possible Note taker Lecture for 3 October Why write Satire? People have their reasons. “multi-purpose discourse”-Linda Hutcheon RENAISANCE RABELAIS (1491-1553) - Renaissance Humanism - Reject monastic life - ended life as perished priest - outspoken advocate for religious reform - critical of church’s inference on people’s lives - suspicious of Christian dogma which he believe censored humanists - believed in the natural goodness of human beings – people should have a happy life (eat, drink, and be marry, very prevalent in Gargantua and Patagruel) - church deemed body to be unclean, humans are sinful (believed that it was a blasphemy to God if people didn’t eat what God brought forth) - Histories of Gargantua and Pantagruel is a celebration of life and rejoicing in what makes us human - Translated Lucian’s True History from Greek to Latin - monk - Catholic Histories of Gargantua and Pantagruel (Menippean satire) - marrow of bone and box of syndenesis (or something) and meaning- trying to claim that the text carries deep meaning and truths. but ironic give the advice to the readers which explain that Rebelais’s is just joking around - However, the man insults the church and scholasticism, so really he’s just covering his ass - serious satire - body humour is not just to entertain but to reject the church’s inhibition on the human body - p.48-49-multi-vocal (Bakhtin- polyvocal), horseplay and seriousness, text overlays characters - The arsewipe pg. 66-8- verse and prose (prevalent in Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland.), rondeaus, Shows that the kid Gargantua likes to use dirty language, statire on scholasticism - parodies church doctrines, satirise monastic life - Drunkards conversation- latin, insulting scholastic life “what came first drinking or thirst?” insult of philosophical debates “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” Rabelais is arguing that thirst should not be a sin - chapter
