Document Summary

If the words can stand on their own, they shouldn"t be considered to be picture books. The pictures should be integral to the story. Writing itself is an informal picture book. Appealing to commercial aspect, entertainment purposes, helps tell the story, can be informational. Picture books are no longer limited for children. Our definition of picture books has to be expansive for a broader audience. Originally for the very young; trying to ease them into reading. There could be a disconnect between text and illustration; greater recognition for the ability of the child reader. In many early picture books, the words and the pictures are in harmony; they tell the same story. The function of the picture is the narrative; the quality of the work matters. In a picture book, the pictures should dominate; the words should be subordinate to the pictures.
