EN 4113 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Linda Hutcheon, Metanarrative, Audre Lorde
Document Summary
Postmodernism is a strategy that is considered an aesthetic response to modernism. It was a huge movement that embraced form and the grand narrative. Primary goal to disable the grand narrative- done through aesthetic techniques such as parody, collage and vestige. There is nothing authentic- there is no original. It must recognize its limits, which exposes its structure (its only a story- it is not the beautiful sentimental narrative that can be found in a modernist project). You would think that feminism and post-modernism work well together because they both disable grand narratives (feminism = patriarchy, post- modernism = any grand narrative). But more works by men engaging in post- modern projects than women. There is a tendency of suspicion and post- modernism. Hutcheon explains how feminisms practice to disable the grand narrative actually informs post-modernism. It is true that post-modernism has established certain strategies that are valuable.
