ENVS 1000 Tutorial 13 Notes Virtualization
Introduction
Many organizations consider virtualization an important tool in building large, cost
effective, system solutions.
We mention virtualization here because, in a sense, it is the opposite side of the coin
Now that all this computing power is available, how do we put it to use?
An introduction to the concept of virtualization is presented
Of course, there are other parts of the system we have yet to consider.
In particular the operating system software and the interconnection of individual
computing systems into larger systems using network technology.
But, hey, it’s ot possile to disuss eerythig all at oe!
Putting all the pieces together
At this point we have explored the various components that make up a computer
system
One or more CPUs, primary storage, I/O modules, various I/O devices, and the buses
that connect everything together.
You have seen how the CPU processes instructions, and the kinds of instructions that
are executed.
You have seen the different methods that are used to transfer data between an I/O
device and memory for use by the CPU.
You’e see that the use of DMA ad a opletio iterrupt is a effetie ad effiiet
way to move large blocks of data quickly.
You’e also seen that programmed I/O is more effective for small amounts of data,
particularly when speeds are extremely slow.
You’e see ho iterrupts a e used together ith prograed I/O to keep a
pipeline of slow, character-based I/O data moving, for example, from a program to a
modem.
