Personal Paragraph on car dependency in Toronto
In Toronto, there is an extreme amount of car dependency, despite living in the city. The
reason behind the fact that Toronto has so much congestion in terms of traffic is because
everybody still feels the need to own a vehicle. About roughly 80% of urban households
without vehicles are located in the central city. (Wohl, 1976) Part of the major problem is
traffic coming in and out of the city from suburban regions. Why do people feel the need
to own a vehicle when there is moderately priced public transportation available
stretching out to these suburbs? The answer is simple but complicated in the same sense.
The people of Toronto do not necessarily trust public transportation enough to get them to
where they need to be on time. If Toronto and these suburban regions had adequate
transportation that could expand further and get people to where they need to be on time,
then there would be less people relying on cars, which would decrease the amount of
congestion in the city. One worthy idea is to create transit oriented development, which is
basically planning a city around the idea of city administration being in charge of
operating public transportation used by the majority of residents in Toronto solely relying
on public transit. The idea suggests that we have high-density housing that allows people
to be easily connected to public places that occupy numerous spaces close to the city’s
transit system. (Transit Oriented Development, 2009)
