Week 2: Thinking about history
How is history told?
a) history could just be empirical: collect facts; find connections; choose salient data: history as
one thing after another
Does History simply emerge out of data?
who chooses salience?
who chooses topic, period, data itself?
Data is not neutral
b) history could just be propaganda: history written to fit an AGENDA
CONSCIOUS: examples of self-conscious revisionist history--some which go so far as to change
documents and facts
UNCONSCIOUS agendas in history
"Great Man" theory of history (the idea that history is driven by the achievements of great
people--this has tended to be biased in favour of men)
