Week 2: Thinking about history How is history told? a) history could just be empirical: collect facts; find connections; choose salient data: history as one thing after another Does History simply emerge out of data? QUESTIONS ARISE  who chooses salience?  who chooses topic, period, data itself?  Data is not neutral b) history could just be propaganda: history written to fit an AGENDA CONSCIOUS: examples of self-conscious revisionist history--some which go so far as to change documents and facts UNCONSCIOUS agendas in history  "Great Man" theory of history (the idea that history is driven by the achievements of great people--this has tended to be biased in favour of men) 
