Television showed old movies in the beginning when it was getting popular, because the first instinct is always to go backwards and use techniques of an old medium. Next, people will bring new techniques and integrate them with those old things. Films began with short films and have now reached a point where they are again in demand (youtube and other video sharing sites). First animation consisted of taking a number of stills, putting them together, and showing the frames one by one as animation. Edison"s shorts begins with films that he makes with a kinetoscope. Edison was already famous, had an access to his own laboratory.
