Founded in 1927 as a kind of company union designed to forestall unionization of the creative talent and skilled professionals (figured giving out awards would stop talent from unionizing) Becomes famous for its annual awards ceremony. *vertical integration = companies controlling all aspects (producing, distributing, and exhibiting) Prior to 1920, few people considered cinema an art form. Influence of german expressionism (1919-1926) produced body of work that was connected by theme and visual style; it was inspired by earlier developments in other art forms like theatre and painting.
