Gov"t tried to keep workers happy to avoid protests. Gov"t reaching out to labour companies to support the war effort. Pearl harbor attacked by japanese navy on dec 7th, 1941. Job was to assist the media to spread the message about supporting the war. Bureau of motion pictures tried to influence hollywood to make films to support the war effort and to make films that portrayed the us in a positive light. Filmmakers wanted to join the fight, documented the struggle. Saw to encourage soldiers to understand why they are fighting (sophisticated films/documentaries) Combat films of world war ii: male group life and death task. Group often covered various stereotypical american (italian from ny, male from the south, etc. : teamwork and individual heroics, professionalism and stoicism, outsiders threaten group, outsiders win admission to group. Screenplay by john howard lawson (based on a russian play)
