Stories are basic unit of film narrative. Stories the means by which we piece together and communicate facts. Drawn on film, first form of animation at the nfb. Developed into true art form by mclaren. Part of his quest to solve the problem of movement": how to successfully replicate and translate the physical movement of objects & beings onto the film screen. Aka direct animation" or animation without camera". Images are created directly on the film stock itself, instead of photographed frame by frame with an animation camera. Can be done with negative (blank) film stock or developed film stock. Real settings, live beings and actual objects are used in such a way that it looks as they"re being moved about by invisible pixies". Stop motion animation technique: shooting, one frame at a time, characters or objects whose movements are posed & controlled entirely by the filmmaker.
