Document Summary

Technology and society chapter 1: the technological society: only when our technology fails us do we suddenly realize the depth of our dependence on that technology. 2 perspectives of technology: simulation geared toward the development of tools that can resemble or outperform human faculties, augmentation attempts to integrate machines and humans into new hybrid actors with added capabilities. Historical definitions of technology: technology as material substance. Ideas represent the thought processes that precede the tool, which is often referred to as the technological imagination: design middle of spectrum. Mediating between the abstract idea and the object: techniques describes the actual artifact, and lies at the other end of the spectrum, advantage - the definition of technology goes beyond a pure consideration of artifact. If technology and society are one it stops an investigation of how they influence each other. No one meaning of technology, a complex combination of definitions.
