Ocean geographies: ocean as transportaion, ocean resources, ocean ecologies. Most lows from europe to north america. Un convenion on the law of the sea 1982 (look back to prof. preston lecture) Right of a country (1) to exist and (2) to control its own afairs and territory within its boundaries. Territory includes part of the sea and ships carrying naional lags. Safety and polluion: internaional mariime organizaion, inspecions: flag state plu: port state controls, example: newfoundland aquaic invasive species. Invasive species comes through ships (look at moodle) Avoiding regulaion and taxes: flags of convenience (foc) Panama, liberia, marshall islands (40% of shipping: no taxes charges, ships not regulated regularly, not doing their job s. Overall: some 80% of ships carry foc. Nobody wants to take responsibiliies of boats (boats with foc) Top 10 naionaliies of workers (philippines, china, ukraine, russia, india, turkey, etc)
