Parts VS. Wholes
● The world that geographers study is a ‘whole’
○ This whole has parts
○ All things are interrelated; some more than others
● The changes in the world in relation to places/regions
● Implication: An internationalist outlook
● SPSE
○ Space, Place, Scale, Environment
● Interaction between society and its physical environment
● Where things are, and why they are where they are
● How different places are interdependent - connected by the world economy
● Spatial integration process: among places
● Contradiction and conflicts in the world-system
Three laws:
● Scaling up
○ From city state, ect.
○ Interactions have been less localized and increasingly global
○ The geographical scale of human interaction has been increasing over time
● Materialism
○ ‘Eat before…’ (agriculture, etc.)
○ Materialist approach
○ Humans have to eat and drink before they can do anything else
○ Production of food and related items
● Unevenness
○ Economic development
○ Geographical unevenness
○ Culture, politics
To exist, we need means of existence (1)
● Subsistence needs (food, health care, etc.)
● Raw materials and energy (from nature)
● Tools, machines
● Human labour
○ Physical and mental abilities
■ Reproduction of the species
