Readings: dessler (2016) ch9, skim: ipcc (2014) climate change summary p. 2-16. The rate of climate change is alarming because the earth warms 0. 05 c per century but by the end of the 21st century the earth will be a couple of degrees warmer which is 100 times faster. Rate matters because the faster the earth warms the less time people and the natural ecosystems have to adapt to it. Why warmer climate is not better is because our current natural ecosystems and human society have adapted to the present climate. If the climate become warmer we will be not adapted to it. Positives of warming: less extreme cold weather mortality, benefits to agriculture (freezing of crops can destroy them), plant growth may be enhanced in some regions due to high level of. Co2 and water availability: but most of these +ves will be outweighed by the -ve effects. The increase in global average temperature is not uniform.
