Series of interviews: 180 men and women were interviewed about their family life, revealing what they thought about their household and work life. Discussed the gender contract: men as providers and women as full time homemakers. Conflict between the means of capital accumulation on the one hand and social reproduction. Fundamental incompatibility between the way that the workplace is structured and the way the domestic sphere operates, which is organized to ensure that its members are ready to engage with the public world, not the other way around. The family household: the role of the wife is to prepare people to go out to work. Recreating and restoring household members to be available for wage work and be functioning members of society: nurture children. Wage workers go out into the public realm and come back to the household, which causes them to be deenergized, demoralized, destabilized emotionally, and depressedthey need to be reenergized and thus, have the need to recreated.
