Fairy tales: struggle against severe difficulties in life unavoidable. Modern stories tend to avoid these problems; children need to be given suggestions in symbolic forms to learn how to deal w/ these issues. Inner and outer struggles of the hero imprint morality on children. Child identifies w/ the hero b/c they make a deep positive appeal to them. Polarization of character traits (one brother was stupid one was smart) Give hope that even the meekest can succeed in life.
