Ancient near east = the territory that roughly covers what is referred to in the modern world as the. The ancient near east (ane) = a. k. a the orient. The orient = the east that was closest to europe. The philistines were of aegean origin ->> they established the concept of city-states. Acadian served as the language for international trade for about 150 years in the ancient near east. The phoenicians were descendants of the canaanites. Anyone who can read hebrew can read phoenician texts (they are very closely related) Israel was a latecomer on the scene = 1,200 bc. Great civilizations of mesopotamia, egypt, indus valley, and anatolia. Israel was always a poor backwater at a crossroads. Northern kingdom of israel (rival of southern israel) (930-721 bc0 -> ten lost tribes. Paleolithic = old stone age (until 8,500 bc) Archaeology [plato] = the study of the past. [hesiod] and the ages of humanity = gold, silver, bronze, and iron.
