Cistercians want to live the true monastic life: reflects a rural and reforming world. Ideal of the friars is to live the life of christ: reflects the world view of the 13th century. Urban life, universities, heresy, religious life of the laity. Money from land and lay brother labour money from begging. Genesis of the order in the ideals and actions of francis: son of an italian cloth merchant, had a brief career as a crusader. In his early 20s he underwent an intense, religious transformation: renounces inheritance and career, strips naked in the public square. Francis goes on to live by begging: tends to lepers, sings, prays, talks to animals, and writes his own prayers. Francis decides that he should preach to people: not a priest and only priests can preach, minimal education, asks the pope"s permission to preach.
