Glass blowing invented by the romans in first century ce: mostly used to make vessels, sine references to glass panes and windows. Early medieval period, some references to glass in church windows: major innovation was painting on the glass. Romanesque churches had glass windows but little of it survives. Stained glass booms in the gothic period: silver stain. Stained glass continued until the reformation where the art died out. Buy the glass: usually not made in the church or cathedral, glass made out of sand and wood ash melted together with oxides to add colour, blown and shaped flat. Design the panels: designs were drawn on a whitewashed table, cut the glass into its desired shape using a grazing iron. Paint the glass: mix glass paint and then paint, fire each piece to set the paint.
