The ottoman-turks had controlled most of eastern europe. They were facing setbacks because of nationalism. European governments took an interest in the demise. Russian proximity to the ottoman"s naturally gave russia a rationale. France and britain were offered commercial opportunities. Failure of a negotiated settlement led russia into war. Gb and france declared war on russia. Napoleon was concerned about the balance of power. If russia was successful, they would turn further east. Russia was weakened by the failure of its army.
