Exploration and empire: spain and portugal: maritime exploration led by portuguese in the 15th and 16th century, first europeans to reach asia by sailing around africa, established fortifies trading posts along african coast, emigration, slave trade. If you are looking at things in the 15/16/17/18 century, you would not think that europe was going to achieve this sort of power.
