In 1770, boston massacre, british army killed 5 male civilians and injured 6 others: increases animosity towards the british, americans continue to protest until britain removes the tea tax. The loyalists and slavery: about 80,000 loyalists living in the colonies, loyalists were free blacks and enslaved persons, expansion of the colonies in the new republic meant expansion of slavery, as western expansion is occurring. Lord dunmore"s proclamation: freedom was offered to any slave owned by a rebel or any slave who would desert his master to fight on the loyalist side. Intended to weaken rebel forces by removing labour force: it was not a humanitarian effort, more than 300 slaves joined the british, some british officers sold their captured slaves and put them back into slavery. Black loyalists: some of them were placed in other forms of labour.
