Italy wanted to control more colonies and territory. Austrians defeated by prussians in 1863 at the prussian borders. Bismarck waged franco prussian war which was the last war of unification. Turks were defeated against the russians, which had a technological edge and allies in the baltics. The ottoman was being chiselled away by other nations through a series of wars in 1912 and 1913. This was because they did not enter into many european affairs. Most threatening to their empire was the french. Boers caused a great deal of trouble for the british. Boer war show an industrialization of warfare and valuable lessons for the first world war. Germany - austria-hungary - italy (1882) italy drops out in 1914. France - russia (1894) franco - russian alliance. Britain - russia (1907) anglo-russian agreement (afghan/tibet and persia) These alliances were the reason that the first world war became so big.
