But there were still many more poor people. He then led a rebellion against the bakufu (which he was supposed to be an official of). Inflation was part of the reason why japan got poorer and poorer: by 1830"s and 1840"s, these crises (of poverty and inflation) has reached dramatic outcomes. Informed japanese referred to their status as the warring state period: they thought russia was the most powerful state in the area- but they did. 2 not have very correct outlooks on the rest of the world. Morrison incident of 1837 bakufu fired on them: castaways go to japan and want to extend trading relations with them. Satsuma went in and took a lot of sugar and made it their own monopoly.
