The courts started to understand by the walker"s abusive cycle. They stay for love, for children, due to low self esteem (they believe their violence is the fault of the woman), because they are ashamed of the abuse, and because the husbands apologise. There are two court decisions in canada which include battered woman syndrome: r v. whynot and r v. lavallee. Jane and billy stafford lived on the rural shore of nova scotia, with their one four year old son, and also allen whynot, who was 16 and the product of another relationship. They have some others living there too, including ronald, but they"re not important. Billy was unemployed and was accused of drug dealing, whist jane brought in the largest wage of the family from her job at a nursing home. Jane left home at age 15 because her father was a drunk and beat her mother.
