Murder rate as useful measure of societal violence: Murder always likely to be reported/counted (the image of the dark figure) Murder rate was a lot higher in the 1400-1500s, and had a steady decline since then. Looks not just at murder, but at society and social behavior as a whole. Turned to etiquette books, manuals of conduct; improved standards of behavior. Since medieval period, increasingly strict requirements of personal self-control; socio- psychological, inner-person traits. Growing state assumes more control over relations between individuals and a monopoly on violence. Often related to issues of honour and masculinity. Arnulf papenzoorn; managed to charm 2 upper class. Engaged to elizabeth borluut- left her for better looking annekin de brune. Jan de brune (brother of annekin; cousin of new chief) Based off of economic, social and political issues. Must result from genuine grievance; could not be an imagined incidence. Not a spontaneous act- must have been thought of prior to the act.
