Medical sociology/anthropology: believes that health problems have social origins, need to look at how society is organized and this effect on health. Health literacy is a social and cultural practice comprised of the totality of communicative practice in which individuals purposely engaged rather than a predefined set of reading and writing skills. Bourdieu"s concept of habitus and capital: bourdieu coined concept of practice, there are rules of practice when you live your daily life. Reflects history, general environment around us, social processes play out. Ex: body language of genders: social capital this refers to one"s ability to draw upon resources in multiple networks these are social contacts. Consider the health profile of an elderly person whom you know well. How mothering is conceived, organized, and carried out is not simply determined by these conditions, however. Mothering is constructed through men"s and women"s actions within specific historical circumstances.
