Imperialism: involves an established relationship between a dominant center and its peripheral dependents: colonialism: involves the claiming of political sovereignty over a piece of territory by a centralized metropole or imperial center. This also involves an unequal relationship between colonizers and colonized as well as control and manipulation of an indigenous population: osterhammel: colonialism is a relationship between an indigenous (or forcibly imported) majority and a minority of foreign invaders. The fundamental decisions affecting the lives of the colonized people are made and implemented by the colonial rulers in pursuit of interests that are defined in a distant metropolis. Rejecting cultural compromises with the colonized population, the colonizers are convinced of their own superiority and their ordained mandate to rule. There are centers to colonial empires with a large economic motivation: what is a metropole or metropolis: this is the recognized center of an empire.
