(contemporary) You may choose a topic that has changed the way we think about things. (historical) That is, there is always an assumed answer or at least a presumed set of answers. Often the language and phrasing used are clues to how you might approach the answer to a question. This phase is very important because it sets the intellectual context for your response. You must set limits on your research scope.
