(interventions) to enhance learning and retention e.g. EMT Error Management
Training “trainer allows trainee to make mistakes as part of learning
o Criterion defines the performance expectations and standards after training
Purchase or Design?
- Advantages of outsourced (purchased) training programs
o High quality
o Immediate delivery
o Ancillary services (tests, videos, follow-up etc.)
o Potential to customize
o Benefits from others’ experience (course evolves)
o Extensive testing
o Often less expensive (but not always) - depending on number of trainees -
“economies of scale”
- Advantages of in-house designed and developed programs
o Security and confidentiality
o Use organization’s jargon
o Incorporate organization’s values (basis for behaviours)
o Use internal content expertise “SME’s
o Understand audience
o Pride and credibility in having created program
- Factors to be considered when purchasing or designing:
o Economies of scale - cost, number of employees, (spread costs over many
customer/trainees or employees)
o Is the training content organization specific or generic?
o Does organization have expertise and resources required to develop? - time and
money.
o When is it needed (time to design)?
o Use of both purchase standard program and customize or design in-house?
Training Content
- Crucial stage:
o Needs analysis and training (learning) objectives guide and determine content
decisions
o Highest priority question is: “What is to be accomplished? - The knowledge to
acquire affect on behaviour”
- Requirements for delivery:
o Is training legislated - e.g. Health and Safety training?
o Is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) required, e.g. RN?
