Employees can work 5 consecutive hours without a 30 minute meal break. Max number of hours most employees can work in a week is 48 hours: some jobs are 60 hours for emergencies. The regular rate of pay when working overtime is 1. 5x and holidays are 2. 5x. If an employee has worked for 18 months and will be terminated, they must be given 2 weeks of notice/termination pay. If they fail to give notice, employer gets constructive dismissal. Part time work is increasing: organizational reasons, cost containment (part timers earn much less and do not get benefits, meeting staffing needs: short term business demands, vacations, temp leaves etc. (ex. Instability: fluctuations in work hours by week, time of day, and length of shift, reductions in work hours when work is slow; Flexible schedules (flextime) increase the ability of employees to meet both their work and family needs, and can reduce stress in dealing with work and family issues.
