HUMA 1105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Homeric Greek, Odysseus, Eurymachus
Document Summary
The odyssey, written by homer, is an epic greek poem depicting the extraneous journey and severe hardship of the trojan war hero, odysseus. Odysseus and his family have been separated since the trojan war and he has been missed dearly; everybody longs for his return. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, sees this turmoil and decides to aid him in his journey back to. With the help of the goddess, odysseus is able to finally reach his nostos, or, homecoming. Athena, instead of being perceived as the mythical and mighty god that she is, represents herself as a spiritual guide and support system for the unfortunate family, usually in disguise. In return, prayer and sacrifice are often preformed by these mortals in favor and thanks to the gods of olympus. The relationship between the goddess athena and odysseus is one that is most ideal to most mortals.
