HUMA 1105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Odysseus
Document Summary
Telemakhos is speaking before the assembly in ithaka, complaining how there has not been one since odysseus left the city. He makes claims against the suitors that they are eating his livestock, drinking his wine and desecrating his household. However, she completes a portion of the weave every day and then undoes it by staying up all night just so that she doesn"t have to finish the weave immediately, hoping for the return of odysseus. This trickery is revealed by one of penelope"s maids to the suitors. Antinoos asks telemakhos to either dismiss penelope from the house or make her marry a man her father decides and she agrees upon, because he does not condone the trickery penelope has done. To this telemakhos replies that he simply cannot banish his mother from the house, claiming that her parting curse would call hell"s furies to punish him .
