Document Summary

From the christian point of view, this crusade was a great disaster, but at the same time a legendary story which gave the french yet another patron saint. Joinville took part in the crusades of 1250 when he was around 23 years old. He was already married and a father of two children. Franks had been in outremer for 150 years since 1100. Outremer: the land overseas : holy places associated with christ"s life were located which they sought to capture or defend through their crusades. Joinville wrote the story in 1309 at the age of 84. But many scholars argue that it has two dates: closer to the time of the event, then around 1309. Purpose of story: validates relics of saint louis and revalidates his saintliness; is something for future kinds to look upon and take inspiration from. There are two main components to joinville"s work: hagiography: the life of a saint, military history.
