Descartes: wrote books for the rules of regulation (reguli) (in course kit read pg. Past thinkers were members of the clergy but new thinkers not-so-much. New thinkers thought their quest was purely philosophic so they didn"t care if the teaching opposed that of the church"s doctrine. New thinkers aimed to solve failure of predecessors (medieval people called exegetes believed that all truths are known) New thinkers ended complete observance of bible and aristotle"s writings. On the bright side people turned to subjects to learn how learning advanced. Conclusion: in the history of learning, only two areas brought about knowledge math and empirical sciences. What made these to knowledges possible was method. In order to proceed enlightenment thinkers had very different opinions: descartes. Wanted to emulate the maths and thus mathematize general learning. In the reguli, he attempts to make a method and mathematical method for learning generally. In rules 1-4 he explains how math creates knowledge.
