Document Summary
Meaning: extending a country"s power and influence through diplomacy/military force. View that canadian and british colonies should be tied to britain. When canada was born, imperialist feelings were non-existent. Britain wanted to abandon colonies as the defence for them was too expensive. Canada"s economic troubles and tensions between the french-canadians and english- Canadians developed canada"s want to have ties with he mother country. This was also initiated by wilfred laurier in the 80"s by the liberal party. People wanted continentalism to exist as they favoured closer ties to us. This alarmed many as they were afraid to lose their british identity. British were worried about the growing powers of america and germany + losing their superpower identity in the world. White man"s burden: superiority of anglo-saxons wanted to invite britain"s colonies to join them in the ruling go there by bringing benefits of the british mindset. Notedly, imperialism contained a large amount of racism.
