Lecture 8: Film
As a medium designed to tell story, Film is undoubtedly the most important to
emerge in the 20th century. Film is a narrative medium and like any other narrative
media, such as novels, operas, short stories and epics, Film relies on a range of
conventions to realize its storytelling capabilities. These conventions are the
following:
1. Montage
Can be understood as a general term for editing which in the days of
celliod film meant the actual cutting and splicing together of actual film to
arrange the narrative structure of the film. A more specific application
refers to an editing technique in which shots are juxtaposed on an often
fast-paced fashion that compresses time and conveys a lot of information in a
relatively short period.
2. Mise-en-scene
Encompasses everything that appears in the film frame - actors, lighting, decor,
costumes, props, etc., Formed by all the elements that appear within the shot
itself, as opposed to the effects creating by editing.
