Lecture 13: The Detective TV Series
The conventions of situating Sherlock Holmes in Victorian England is attributed by
film historian due to the success of the 1939 “The Hound of the Baskervilles”. After
that film, periodization is said to remain as a central component of every screen
representation of Sherlock Holmes.
The BBC Series of Sherlock Holmes is set in contemporary London and the various
characters all dress in styles and use technologies associated with the 21st century.
Does this not indicate that the tradition has been broken? Perhaps. But it is worth
considering that a large part of the BBC Sherlock Holmes series appeal is due to its
departure from the tradition, which is to say that the series will be less remarkable if
the expectation is established by the 1939 film was not so established.
