Even if you are a peasant caste you will have a higher rank because you own land: interdependence the jajmani system division of labour, exchange of services, ex. Sharing of crops, there is a bit of economic integration, rituals. Every jati has a specific name in contrast to the varna divisions. Endogamy is a key aspect of jati, can only marry within your jati. Hereditary or ascribed status, if you are born as an untouchable you are stuck with this. Commensality eating together, you don"t eat with lower caste if you are a brahmin for example.
