Nb: the course is based on the contemporary views on advertising and popular culture imagery. It is the images created within the context of popular culture and what they reflect about culture in general. There are two(2) aspects /dimensions of any artifact in popular culture: symbolic dimension- the discourse. The symbolic dimension is the deeper associated meaning these items represent to us, the consumers: material dimension- the literal interpretation (seeing /hearing etc). the material dimension represents the literal, surface composition of the item and its functional applications. The school of modernism and school of postmodernism are both prominent worldviews of culture that are different from each other . When we consider contemporary popular culture, it is useful to look at the two styles, or philosophies, which are most prominent. These are the schools of modernism and postmodernism. Each of these has specific underlying principles which are reflected stylistically when applied in visual imagery.
